hi dear ones,

INDIAN Television Serials

TV Serials in India were known to put up fight for the social causes by making people aware.

In early days there was only one TV channel ‘DOORDARSHAN’ which was government owned and also controlled by the government.

In those days the serials were shown only at the prime time. These serials were mainly used to spread awareness for moral values and duties towards nation as well as scientific achievements of india but also portrayed the lives of Indian middle class in very hilarious and knowing way.

most loved family in INDIA : Hum Log

Some of the best serials of those times were ‘Hum Log’, ‘Buniyaad’, ‘ Turning point’, ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’, ‘Vagle Ki Duniya’, ‘Fauji’, ‘Circus’, ‘ Malgudi days’, ‘ Surabhi’, ‘ Antakshari’, ‘ Vyomakesh Bakshi’, ‘Karamchand’  and many more.

But the history was created by the serials like Ramanand Sagar’s “ RAMAYAN “ and B.R. Chopra’s “ MAHABHARAT “ & ‘ Rangoli’, & ‘ Chitrahaar’.  It is said that when these serials were broadcasted on Sundays for 1 hour people glued themselves to tv sets; people were used to finish there work befor these serials or stalled them till the episode finished. Also, parents were used to threaten there kids for finishing there homeworks before serial or they will not be allowed to watch the serials which was considered as the greatest threat to then children.

The Hindi television industry has grown in leaps and bounds during the last years. The number of channels has increased and as a result the audience is getting numerous options. This is an undeniable fact that music and songs have played an important role in this excellent and rapid growth of the industry.

The Hindi TV serials are the exact/very close portrayal of the emotions of Indian audience. Indians are in general emotional people and they like to watch the burning emotions on their television screens. This is the reason why the serial makers often put great emphasis on the music and background scores. As a matter of fact they are quite experimental about the music at times. Though there are serials where the conventional tunes are used to intensify the melodramatic situations like a hot “Saas-Bahu” fight or a romantic scene between two love-birds, sometimes they also use the popular old and new film songs for this.

Film and Serial producer Ekta Kapoor, the daughter of veteran actors Jeetendra and Shobha Kapoor, is known for producing numerous soap operas and movies. Ekta is crowned ‘queen of soap operas’ and ventured into filmmaking in the late 1990s.
Her most famous television ventures are ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii’ and ‘Kasautii Zindagii Kay’ ’Balikavadhu’ and so on…

She has produced films like ‘ Kya Kool hai hum’, and recently produced ‘Love, Sex Aur Dhokha’.

The usage of great background score and songs help them attract the Indian crowd and get them more involved in the daily soap. This is basically an efficient and effective strategy to pull up the TRP rating of the serials.

There are also Comedy serials which also were and are based on middle class as well as rich class in India. Some of them are ‘ Nukkad’, ‘ Flop Show’, ‘ Dekh Bhai Dekh’, ‘Khichadi’, ‘ Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai’ are few of them. These serials also used music as source of comedy and parody.

This is quite similar with the reality shows and music and dance competitions. They often need to build up tension during the result declaration and what except music can help them more. Sometimes the title songs of the shows become quite popular and people hum them like the movie songs. Hence lyrics and tune both are important for the TV serials.

The rise of reality shows has not affected the popularity of drama serials but on the contrary  it has perked up the competition and aggressive marketing strategy.

Some of the reality shows, music and dance competition shows are ‘Dance India Dance’, ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, ‘ Big Brother’ , ‘ Indian idol’, ‘ Jhalak Dikhla ja’ etc.

Then there are Comedy shows/competition on every channel like ’Laughter Challenge’, ‘Comedy Circus’ etc.

And finally not to forget the Serials for children. Many serials were and are made for children only ; some of them are’ Sigma’, ‘ Indradhanushya’, ‘ Shaktiman’, ‘ Chandrakanta’ and ‘ Jungle book ‘, ‘ Vikram-Vetal’; are to name a few.

In short the serials have provided the great entertainment to the Indian people and also opened the limitless opportunities for individuals and groups interested in the creative arts. And also have created the great employment which is a need for the developing country like INDIA.
